Super Herbs: More Than Just Flavor!

The next time you find yourself with a little tummy ache because you just had to have one more taste of that mouth-watering dish, try this down-home cure. Add a little oregano to orange leaf tea and sip. Why does this work? Well, the jury is still out on a definitive answer. What is known is that oregano is a super herb because it has anti-bacterial properties and possibly helps settle your stomach. However, the medical community is not so convinced that this actually works. There aren’t any studies to prove it does or doesn’t work so they are staying mum. With one exception, pregnant women and people with iron deficiency should steer clear of this remedy because the oregano interferes with iron absorption. But for those of you who are looking for a more natural way to handle such issues, this could be a good alternative to over the counter antacids.

Finding Zen in Your Fridge?

In the recent May 2010 issue of InStyle Magazine, writer/editor Michelle Hainer shares some pointers on how we can organize our refrigerator for better balance and maybe find a little peace of mind in the process.  Some great suggestions are keeping like items together and even decanting juice and milk into similar pitchers to reduce clutter and add eye-pleasing symmetry. Another great suggestion was to include a lazy susan on the second shelf to keep small condiments that get lost somewhere in the deep recesses of our fridge in one place. My other favorite suggestion was using new foodsaver technology to give fruits and vegetables we pick up from the local farmer’s market longer lifespans, a new use for the crisper are cans of soda and those deadly snack foods (out of sight out of mind, right?) hidden away. I also liked the idea of labeling food items for expiration dates so it makes the process of cleaning out the fridge less of a chore.  What do you do to keep your refrigerator organized?
